How to Design a Custom Sticker
A practical guide to creating sticker designs that look great in print — from using our AI tools to prepping artwork files.
Start With a Clear Idea
Before you open any design tool, figure out what your sticker needs to do. Is it a logo for your brand? A fun illustration to sell or give away? A label for a product? The purpose shapes every decision you make — from the shape and size to the colors and finish.
Sketch a rough idea on paper first. It doesn’t need to be pretty. You’re just working out the layout: where the text sits, how big the graphic is, and how much white space you want around it. This step saves you hours of fiddling in software later.

Uploading Your Own Design
If you already have a finished design, just upload your file during the order process. We accept PNG, PDF, SVG, AI, EPS, and most standard image formats. Our system will show you a proof so you can check everything looks right before it goes to print.
Best formats for upload:
Vector files (AI, EPS, PDF) — the gold standard for sticker printing. Vector art scales perfectly at any size, produces the sharpest lines, and gives the cleanest cut paths. If you’re working in Adobe Illustrator, save as AI or EPS at 1:1 scale with fonts outlined and images embedded.
PNG — the most common choice for raster designs. Use PNG when your design includes transparency (like a die-cut sticker with no background). Make sure it’s high-res (300 DPI at final print size).
SVG — another vector format that works well for logos and simple graphics. Resolution-independent, so it always prints sharp.
Avoid JPEGs if possible. They compress your image and don’t support transparency. If JPEG is all you have, make sure it’s the highest quality export your software allows.
Color Mode: CMYK vs RGB
This is one of the most common mistakes in sticker design. Your screen displays colors in RGB (red, green, blue), but printers use CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black). Some colors that look vibrant on screen — especially neon greens, electric blues, and bright purples — will appear duller in print because they fall outside the CMYK color range.
For the most accurate color results, design in CMYK mode from the start. In Illustrator, set your document color mode to CMYK. In Photoshop, go to Image → Mode → CMYK Color. If you’re uploading an RGB file, our system will convert it, but you may notice slight color shifts on very saturated tones.
No Pantone or spot colors. Our digital presses print in CMYK process color only. Pantone swatches will be converted to their closest CMYK equivalent, which may not match exactly.
Resolution: Why 300 DPI Matters
DPI (dots per inch) determines how sharp your sticker prints. At 300 DPI, individual dots are invisible to the naked eye and your design looks crisp and professional. At 150 DPI, you’ll start to see softness. Below 100 DPI, pixelation is obvious.
Your design should be at least 300 DPI at the final print size. If you want a 3″ × 3″ sticker, your image should be 900 × 900 pixels minimum. Designing larger and scaling down is fine, but designing small and scaling up will cause blurriness.
Text in Photoshop — text created in Photoshop is rasterized (converted to pixels), which can cause edges to blur at print size. Whenever possible, set type in Illustrator or another vector program where text stays sharp at any size.
Bleed, Safe Area & Cut Lines
Stickers are cut with precision blades, and blades need a little room to work. Understanding bleed and safe area prevents ugly white edges and accidentally trimmed text.
Bleed (2 mm / 1/16″ outside the cut line) — extend your background artwork past the cut line by at least 2 mm on all sides. This ensures that if the cut shifts slightly, there’s no thin white border. If your design has a colored background, extend that color into the bleed area.
Safe area (2 mm / 1/16″ inside the cut line) — keep all important elements — text, logos, fine details — at least 2 mm inside the cut line. Anything closer to the edge risks getting clipped unevenly.

Designing for Transparent & Holographic Stickers
If you’re ordering transparent stickers or holographic stickers, your file needs a transparent background — not a white one. A white background will print as a visible white layer on clear or holographic material.
White ink: on transparent and holographic materials, areas without ink are see-through. If your design has white elements (white text, a white border), you need to specify a white ink layer. Vector files (AI/EPS) handle this best. Our team will review your file and confirm white ink placement in your proof.
Think About the Shape
A rectangular design on a die-cut sticker wastes the format’s potential. Die-cuts follow the outline of your artwork, so design with the contour in mind. If your design is naturally circular, round stickers are the obvious choice and tend to be more affordable than custom die-cuts.
For complex shapes with thin extensions (like a character’s arm sticking out), keep in mind that narrow points are fragile and may peel more easily. A minimum width of about 1/4″ for any protruding element keeps your sticker durable.

Vector vs Raster: Which File Type to Design In
This single choice determines how much flexibility you have later, and it is worth understanding before you open any software.
Vector files — AI, EPS, SVG, and vector PDF — describe your artwork as mathematical shapes. They scale to any size with perfectly crisp edges, which means the same file works for a 1-inch packaging seal and a 3-foot window decal. Vector is the right format for logos, lettering, flat illustration, and anything with clean geometric shapes. It is also the easiest for us to generate an accurate cut line from.
Raster files — PNG, JPG, TIFF, PSD — are grids of pixels. They handle photographs, painted textures, and soft gradients that vectors cannot represent naturally, but they only look sharp at the resolution they were created at. Enlarging a raster file does not add detail; it just makes the existing pixels bigger and softer.
The practical rule: if your design was drawn with shapes and text, get it as vector. If it was painted, photographed, or heavily textured, raster is correct — just make sure it is built at full print size from the start rather than scaled up afterward.
Designing Small: What Survives at 2 Inches
Most stickers are printed between 2 and 3 inches, and designs that look fine on a monitor routinely fall apart at that size. The fix is to check early, not at proof stage.
Zoom your artwork to actual print size on screen — or better, print it on ordinary paper and hold it in your hand. Then look for the four things that consistently fail:
- Hairline strokes. Anything thinner than about 0.5pt at final size risks printing broken or disappearing entirely. Thicken outlines rather than hoping for the best.
- Small text. Below roughly 6pt at final size, letterforms start to fill in and become unreadable. If your tagline does not fit legibly, cut it — a sticker with three readable words beats one with twelve illegible ones.
- Fine detail in illustrations. Individual hairs, tiny highlights, and intricate line work merge into a smudge. Simplify deliberately for small sizes rather than letting the printer decide.
- Low-contrast color pairs. Two similar tones that read as distinct on a bright monitor can collapse into one on vinyl. Increase contrast wherever detail matters.
A useful habit: design at final size from the start instead of designing large and scaling down. It forces every one of these decisions while you can still act on them.
Fonts and Text: The Most Common Reprint Cause
More proofs get delayed by font problems than by anything else, and every one of them is avoidable.
Convert text to outlines before you submit. In Illustrator this is Type → Create Outlines; in Affinity Designer it is Convert to Curves; in Inkscape it is Path → Object to Path. This turns your letters into shapes, so your typography prints exactly as you designed it whether or not the font is installed anywhere else. Keep an editable copy with live text for yourself before you do this — outlining is not reversible.
Check your font licence for commercial use. Free-for-personal-use fonts are common and their licences are frequently ignored. If you are selling the stickers, make sure the licence actually covers it.
Give text room to breathe. Type that runs close to the cut edge looks like a mistake even when the cut is accurate. Pull it well inside the safe area.
Getting Color Right Before You Print
Screens emit light; ink sits on vinyl and reflects it. Some difference between the two is physics, not error — but you can narrow the gap considerably.
Expect vivid screen colors to soften. The most intense electric blues, neon greens, and hot oranges you can display simply do not exist in CMYK ink. They will print as the closest achievable equivalent, which is usually a touch more muted.
Build rich blacks deliberately. Pure 100% K prints as a slightly washed dark grey over a large area. For solid black backgrounds, a rich black mix carries far more depth. For small text, plain 100% K is correct — a rich black mix on tiny type causes registration fuzz.
Match critical brand colors by reference, not by eye. If your brand has an exact color, tell us the specification rather than trusting a screenshot. Monitors vary enormously and an uncalibrated screen is not a reliable reference.
Use your free proof for exactly this. Every order includes a digital proof before printing. Colors, sizing, and cut line are all checkable there, and revisions at that stage cost nothing.
Designing for a Sticker Sheet
Sheets follow different rules from single stickers, and the differences catch people out.
Every sticker on a sheet is kiss-cut through the vinyl but not the backing, so the individual pieces peel away while the sheet stays intact. Leave clear space between designs — pieces crowded together are difficult to peel and the cut lines can visually run into each other. Keep everything comfortably inside the sheet’s outer margin.
Think about the sheet as a composition in its own right, not just a container. Buyers judge a sticker sheet by how it looks whole, so vary the sizes, balance the visual weight, and give the arrangement some deliberate structure. Mixing one large hero design with several smaller ones almost always reads better than a uniform grid.

Why does my sticker look different from my screen?
Screens create color with emitted light and printers create it with ink on vinyl, so the two gamuts do not overlap perfectly. The most saturated screen colors — electric blue, neon green, hot orange — have no exact CMYK equivalent and will print slightly softer. Your free digital proof is the place to catch this before anything goes to print.
Can I design a sticker on my phone?
You can. Our mobile design flow lets you generate artwork or upload an image directly from your phone and set your size and finish without needing a desktop. For detailed illustration or precise typography, desktop software still gives you more control.
What resolution should my image be?
