Custom Labels for Candle Makers

Custom Labels for Candle Makers

Everything you need to know about choosing and designing labels for your candle products.

Why Your Candle Label Matters

A candle label is often the first thing a customer interacts with. Before they smell the candle, before they light it, they see the label. In a market crowded with small-batch and artisan candle brands, your label is what makes someone pick up your candle instead of the one next to it.

Choosing the Right Material

Candle labels face conditions that most labels don’t: heat from the flame, wax spills, and sometimes moisture. Standard paper labels will warp, stain, and peel. You need a material that can handle it.

BOPP (polypropylene) is the most popular material for candle labels. It’s moisture-resistant, holds up well near heat, and wraps smoothly around curved containers.

Vinyl is another solid option, especially for candles sold at outdoor markets. It’s thicker and more durable than BOPP, though slightly less conformable on tight curves.

Whichever material you choose, make sure it’s waterproof. Candle wax, fragrance oils, and cleaning sprays can all damage unprotected labels. Custom roll labels from StickerHood are printed on waterproof materials with a protective finish.

Best Shapes for Candle Containers

Round labels for tin lids. If you sell candles in tins, a round roll label on the lid is the cleanest option. Common sizes are 2″ to 3″ diameter, depending on your tin size.

Oval labels for jars. Oval roll labels work beautifully on the front of curved candle jars. The oval shape follows the curve of the glass naturally, reducing the risk of wrinkling or lifting.

Rectangle or custom die-cut for pillar candles & boxes. Pillar candles and flat-sided packaging call for rectangular labels or die-cut roll labels with a custom shape.

What to Include on a Candle Label

Brand name & logo. This should be the most prominent element on the label.

Scent name. Make it clear and descriptive. Customers browsing a shelf need to identify the scent quickly.

Net weight. Required for retail sale in most markets. List it in ounces and/or grams.

Safety warnings. Candle safety warnings are required by law in many jurisdictions. Common requirements include instructions to keep away from flammable materials, never leave unattended, and keep out of reach of children and pets.

Burn time (optional but recommended). Customers appreciate knowing how long the candle will last. It also helps justify premium pricing.

Ingredients (optional but increasingly expected). Listing your wax type, fragrance source, and wick material builds trust with ingredient-conscious buyers.

Design Tips for Candle Labels

Keep your design clean and uncluttered. Candle labels are typically small, and cramming too much onto them makes the text hard to read. Use a clear hierarchy: brand name first, scent name second, details smaller below.

Choose fonts carefully. Script fonts can look elegant but become unreadable at small sizes. Pair one decorative font for the scent name with a clean sans-serif for the smaller text. Stick to two fonts maximum.

Consider a matte finish for a premium, tactile feel — it’s particularly popular in the candle industry. Both finishes are available on all roll label products.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will candle labels withstand the heat from burning?

Labels on the outside of candle containers don’t experience extreme heat under normal use. BOPP and vinyl labels hold up fine at the temperatures a candle jar reaches during burning.

What size labels do I need for candle jars?

It depends on the jar. For standard 8 oz candle jars, a 2.5″ x 3″ oval or a 2″ x 3″ rectangle is a common starting point. For tin lids, measure the lid diameter and subtract about 1/4″ for a clean fit.

Can I order small quantities to test my label design?

Yes. StickerHood offers low minimums on all roll label products, so you can order a small batch to test how the label looks on your actual candle containers before committing to a larger run.
